Providenciales Wins 2015 TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards

This lovely island, one of almost 40 cays and islands within the Turks & Caicos archipelago, has been recognized as the number one island in the world in the 2015 TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards.

best island in the world tripadvisor
Yes, perfect Provo with its unending stretches of talcum powder white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters and inviting Caribbean hospitality took the top prize, beating out Maui in Hawaii and Roatan in Honduras.

We expect that at the centre of all the accolades favoring Providenciales lies Grace Bay Beach, the sublime silky ribbon of glowing white sand framed by breathtaking shallow blue water. Here the warm embrace of sun and sand invites young families, newlyweds and outdoor enthusiasts to revel in the beauty and adventure which awaits.

Grace Bay Beach Providenciales

Provo is safe and accessible. Generous hospitality, cosmopolitan dining, and world-class services are its hallmark. And its newly renovated airport is serviced daily from just about any North American hub. With all this plus plenty of adventure, sightseeing and pampering, we accept the award with pride.

Three Offbeat Turks and Caicos Activities

Most of our guests at The Sands at Grace Bay are content to get up in the morning, have breakfast, and then spend the rest of the day enjoying the pool or all that Grace Bay Beach has to offer.

The powdery white sand and heavenly turquoise waters have made Grace Bay Beach one of the most desirable travel destinations in the world. For most of our guests the beach right in front of our resort is the purpose of the trip.

However, some of our guests are more restless and want to explore new things. If you’re looking for offbeat activities on the island of Providenciales, here are three suggestions.

Work Out With a Former NFL Star

turks and caicos gym

The Sands at Grace features a great gym to help you keep in shape during your stay. But if you want to have a truly memorable (and fitness-focused) vacation, why not work out with a former professional basketball and football player?

John Wright moved to Grace Bay Beach from Florida 25 years ago and has called the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands home ever since.

After training as a teacher and a kinesiologist, the former NFL football player launched Wrightfully Fit. Wright’s dream has blossomed to become one of the best personal training gyms in the Caribbean.

If you want to turn your vacation into something truly transformational, it’s worth traveling to the Turks and Caicos to talk to John and get in shape.

Go on a Glow Worm Tour

A glow worm tour is the perfect way to make a lasting memory of your stay in the Turks and Caicos.

Glow worms are rare. This species of marine worm can only be found in shallow waters around the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, and Bermuda.

The worms are known as “glow worms” because of the green luminescence that accompanies their spawning cycle. The glowing bioluminescence is visible on the surface of the ocean in very shallow water and lasts for just fifteen minutes.

It’s also quite rare to see the glowing worms throughout the year. The glow worms time their spawning according to the lunar cycle. The light display lasts for just two to three days after the full moon.

So if you do see the glow worms you’ll have a story to tell when you go back home.

If you would like to experience this interesting natural phenomenon while you are visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands, please visit our Tour Operator Desk or contact us.

Go Horseback Riding on the Beach

turks and caicos horseback tours

Grace Bay Beach is located on the leeward side of the island of Providenciales. This means our stretch of beautiful white sand is sheltered from the strong trade winds blowing in from across the Atlantic Ocean.

This makes the placid, turquoise waters and beautiful, powdery sand of Grace Bay Beach the center of island life.

Long Bay Beach, on the other side of Providenciales (see our guide to Providenciales beaches for more information) is a largely “undiscovered” gem. Since there is little development on this stretch of sand it’s possible to experience the wild beauty of the Turks and Caicos.

Traveling on horseback through the shallow, crystal-clear waters of Long Bay Beach is just the way to do it.

Provo Ponies is a small horseback riding stable located on the southeast end of the island of Providenciales. The stable offers two guided horseback rides per day Monday through Friday.

Tour participants ride horses and ponies along quiet dirt roads and trails until they reach the four miles of secluded sand and shallow water of Long Bay Beach.

This is not a “nose to tail” ride and experienced riders are even allowed to canter under appropriate conditions.

As always, contact our friendly and knowledgeable concierge for more information.

New Graceway Smart Supermarket Opens in Providenciales

Providenciales’ new Graceway Smart Supermarket kicked off its grand opening weekend on March 28th and is now open for business. Located in the Town Center Mall in downtown Provo, the new grocery store is only a 3 minute ride from the airport so guests who have just landed may wish to make a stop at this store on their way to our resort to stock their kitchens with some meal and snack time essentials.

The new Graceway Smart store carries more of Graceway’s affordable in-store brand essentials, while the IGA Graceway Supermarket on the Leeward Highway and the Graceway Gourmet Store in the heart of Grace Bay offer a greater selection of brand name and more specialty food items. All three Graceway supermarkets offer guests a complete selection of food, drinks, delis, bakeries, beverages, toiletry items and more – and are easily accessible from The Sands at Grace Bay via a short cab ride.

One of the benefits of staying at The Sands at Grace Bay is our guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen and/or kitchenette in our spacious studio and suite accommodations, that feature modern cooking appliances, dinnerware and cutlery. This allows you and your friends and loved ones to cut down on the costs of eating out for every meal, and enjoy a home cooked meal and your favorite vacation snacks and beverages from the comfort of your room, or on your spacious screened in balcony while enjoying the warm ocean breezes.
