PADDLING IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS

Paddle just off the beach or across the Leeward Channel. Explore the mangroves and shallow waters that are home to many marine creatures, including resident pods of dolphins, solemn turtles, and eagle rays.

It’s possible to get a good look at coral reefs that lie just below under the crystal-clear water. Just a few “paddles” offshore lie even more vibrant corals, brilliant white sand, and dozens of species of rainbow-colored fish including Parrot Fish, African Pompano, and other unique fish.

Providenciales is a hit with kiteboarding enthusiasts.

This exciting watersport allows you to take advantage of the constant east southeast trade winds and the shallow, clear ocean water that make Providenciales an ideal Kiteboarding destination. Long Bay Beach is known as one of the best kiteboarding spots in Provo and is a great place for beginners to learn the sport.

For beginners or those wanting to enhance their riding skills, Kiteboarding lessons from experienced instructors are offered by several Kiteboarding schools here in Providenciales. Lessons range from 1-3 hours in length and beginners can typically begin riding on your own after 2-3 lessons. Local kite schools in Provo also rent kiteboarding equipment by the day or week, for more advanced riders. Tour providers also offer kiteboarding safaris where they take guests to more secluded kiteboarding spots around the island that are only accessible by boat.

For more information on kiteboarding lessons, tours, packages or equipment rentals offered in Providenciales, visit our Tour Operator Desk or contact us directly.

PRIVÉ Charters

Diving in the Turks & Caicos Islands gives you a window into breathtaking marine life.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are home to one of the longest coral reefs in the world. There are an incredible number of opportunities to view wildlife under the water here. You can try “beginner” courses at Coral Gardens right off Grace Bay Beach, or head to the to sea mounts with the chance to encounter migrating humpback whales in the Turks and Caicos passage.

To learn more about Providenciales diving excursions and scuba dive lessons offered in the Turks & Caicos Islands, visit our Tour Operator Desk or contact us.

Self-Guided Tours

Here are some suggestions for self-guided tours, or popular spots to visit for snorkeling and diving.

Turks and Caicos Barrier Reef

A barrier reef protects Provo’s leeward coast, to the north of Grace Bay Beach (the north, Leeward coast of Providenciales). The deep blue ocean on the north side of the reef is over a thousand feet deep and features an incredible wall suitable for exploration by experienced scuba divers.

The turquoise side is about ten to twenty feet deep with numerous coral heads rising to within inches of the water’s surface.

Coral Gardens

Also known as Bight Reef, the Coral Gardens snorkeling area just down the beach from the Sands at Grace Bay is one of the most famous and popular snorkeling areas in the Turks and Caicos. The shallow waters that can be accessed right from the beach, the diversity of fish, and clearly marked-out boundaries make this a great spot to bring children.

Smith’s Reef

Smith’s Reef is actually an array of reefs located close to Turtle Cove, a resort area to the west of Provo and the international airport. Smith’s Reef is somewhat isolated and is little harder to find than other popular areas. This means the reefs will be less busy than Bight Reef, but Smith’s Reef is also harder to find.

Snuba is a fun way to explore the underwater world without needing scuba diving certification.

Snuba is a shallow water diving system that bridges the gap between snorkeling and scuba diving. Kids from ages 8 up to seniors are able to swim a maximum of 20 feet underwater to view tropical marine life in their natural habitat including turtles, stingrays, lobsters, and beautiful fish and the colorful coral reefs.

Contact our Tour Operator Desk located between Hemingway’s and our main swimming pool for more information about Snuba tours in Providenciales.

Glow worm tours are a great way to observe a luminescent monthly mating ritual.

A unique natural phenomenon that occurs only in this part of the Caribbean, and only for a few nights each month. Local tour providers offer Glow Worm Sunset Cruises where you will have the opportunity to watch the water come alive with beautiful green flashes of light.

Glow Worms – Precise Timing, Brilliant Results

Every month for one or two nights following the full moon, the shallow waters of the Caicos Banks to the southwest of Provo are the scene of a wonderful natural phenomenon: millions of glow worms come together to emit unearthly green flashes of light that are visible from the surface of the water.

The glowing lights are produced by a marine worm (Odontosyllis enopla – aka “The Bermudian Fireworm”) and can only be found in shallow waters around the Turks and Caicos and Bermuda to the north.

These marine creatures are known as “glow worms” because of the green luminescence that accompanies their spawning cycle, which usually happens for two or three successive evenings following the full moon.

Visit our blog to learn more about the Glow Worms.

If you would like to experience this interesting natural phenomenon while you are visiting the Turks & Caicos Islands, please visit our Tour Operator Desk or contact us.

Experience horseback riding along the shores of Providenciales with guided tours.

Riding on horseback is an amazing and romantic way to experience the white sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Local horseback riding excursions will take you along quiet dirt roads and canals to one of the most secluded beaches of Providenciales.

Contact us for more information about horseback riding in the Turks and Caicos.

Provo Ponies

Provo Ponies, a small and much beloved horseback riding stable located quite close to The Sands at Grace Bay, leads these popular horseback tours.

The stable offers two guided horseback rides each day Monday through Friday, while Saturdays are devoted to horseback lessons. On Sundays, horses enjoy a day off.

Long Bay Beach

From the Provo Ponies stable, horses travel along quiet dirt roads and trails to Long Bay Beach.

Long Bay Beach, a 4-mile-long secluded beach on the southeast side of Provo, lies on the opposite side of the island from Grace Bay Beach and The Sands resort.

The shallow waters of the Caicos Banks off Long Bay Beach make it an ideal place to take your horse into the ocean.

More experienced riders are given the chance to trot or canter if conditions allow it.

Beach Rides on Providenciales

The morning ride leaves at 9:30am and the afternoon ride at 3:00pm during winter hours, and at 4:00pm during the summer.

Provo Ponies welcomes all experience levels from 6 years old and up. There is a weight limit of 200 lbs (95 kilograms).

Groups are limited to no more than 12 riders, and private horseback rides are available for an additional fee. Helmets are available and are required for children 17 and under.

Contact Provo Ponies to learn more or to arrange a tour.

Natural history tours to the Conch Bar Caves on Middle Caicos are full of additional things to see and do.

The Turks and Caicos are famous for having the largest above-ground cave network in the entire Caribbean and a private tour is just the way to explore it. Some of the most striking caves are found on Middle Caicos, an island of just 300 full-time residents that is wonderful day trip by boat from Provo.

The caves, since they’re above ground, can be explored easily by anyone (with the proper footwear), and offer an interesting glimpse at the natural history and cultural heritage of the Caribbean.

Only recently rediscovered, the caves were once the home of Lucayan Indians, and it’s thought they sheltered in the caves during hurricanes. The Village Caves and the Conch Bar are the most frequently visited caves on Middle Caicos.

The Village & Conch Bar Caves

During the Cretaceous period, 100 million years ago, the Turks and Caicos area was part of a coral reef system that stretched a thousand miles along the edge of the Atlantic ocean. Some of the fossilized reefs can be seen exposed as limestone on West Caicos.

During more recent ice ages, sea levels were much lower than today, and the reefs and limestone deposits were exposed to the elements. Rainwater trickling through the exposed limestone carved out caves.

Middle Caicos Cave Tour

Besides the caves, the island is also home to a number of different attractions and things to do, including the Middle Caicos Crossing Place Trail, a coastal trail that connects the airport and Conch Bar settlement on the eastern end of the island to Bambarra and Lorimers. Cave tours can include snorkeling stopovers, visits to Mudjin Harbour and Bambarra beach and a stop at the Pelican Cay bird sanctuary. Guided snorkeling and kayaking tours are also available. For more information on day-trips by boat to Middle Caicos from Providenciales, visit our Tour Operator desk or contact us directly.

Experience the beauty of Provo’s undersea world.

Caicos Tours provides a fun way for families to see the underwater world without getting wet, from inside a semi-submarine vessel known as the “Undersea Explorer.” This specially designed boat operates just above the surface of the water and allows passengers to sit and view the breathtaking Coral Reef, fish, turtles, and even a “real life Mermaid” from five feet below water, through viewing windows. The two semi-submarine tour options are as follows:

  • The “Turtle Reef Adventure” Guided Tour takes you into the ocean to visit stunning Coral Reef formations, see various reef fish close up and spend time cruising through “Turtle Town” to view endangered Green Turtles in their natural habitat.
  • The “Mermaid Adventure” is a fun and theatrical experience for all ages where you will enjoy an underwater tour past the Coral Reef for spectacular views of vibrant corals and fish. You will then see a real life “Mermaid Bella” swim alongside the submarine windows, with long flowing hair and a fishy tail.

Tours are 45 minutes in length. For prices and more information, contact our Tour Operator Desk or contact us directly.

Customized snorkeling trips are a great way to experience undersea life in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Some of the best Turks and Caicos snorkeling spots (and indeed some of the best in the Caribbean) are located close to Providenciales. Take a sailing trip and cruise past white powder-soft beaches to anchor at isolated reefs. The whole family can snorkel on these trips or stay dry in the shade until you set foot on a deserted beach. If you’re looking for something closer to our hotel here in the beautiful Caribbean, there are plenty of snorkeling spots to choose from.

Half-Day Snorkel Trips in the Turks & Caicos

These half-day snorkeling excursions are great for all ages and all ability levels – and you don’t even have to swim. Stay dry and sip rum punch in the shade while your kids go for a swim.

Snorkeling excursions typically depart from the northeast tip of Providenciales and include a visit to Iguana Island and a stop on the barrier reef to snorkel.

Dive for conch and eat your catch fresh. Set ashore on a secluded Caribbean beach stop to relax, swim, and hunt for shells. Dive for lobsters when in season or conch to grill for lunch.
